The best blinds for Seattle's light and weather

Seattle light is its own thing: soft and grey for months, then long bright evenings in summer, often with glare off the lake or Sound. The right blind tailors that light instead of just blocking it. Here's what works.

For grey days: light-filtering fabrics

Through the PNW winter you want as much of the available light as possible — without the glare on screens. Light-filtering roller and cellular fabrics glow softly and keep rooms feeling bright even under heavy cloud, while still giving daytime privacy.

For bedrooms: blackout

Long summer evenings and early sunrises make blackout essential in bedrooms. A blackout roller or a cellular shade with a blackout lining keeps the room dark and, as a bonus, adds insulation against both summer heat and winter chill.

For view windows: zebra / dual shades

If you've got a view of the water or the mountains, zebra (dual) shades are ideal — align the sheer bands for a clear view, offset them to filter light and add privacy. One blind, both worlds.

For energy: cellular shades

Cellular (honeycomb) shades trap air in their pockets, cutting heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer — a noticeable difference on Seattle heating bills, especially on big or north-facing windows.
